- XD (eXtended Directory/eXchange Directory) by Bob Abrahams.
- January, 1987
-
- This program is released to the public domain and may be used and
- distributed without restriction provided that the program and
- its associated documentation files are not sold. In using this
- program, the user agrees that the author is not liable for
- problems arising in the use of the program, whether in
- the operation of the program itself or its affect on other
- programs or operation of the computer system.
-
- ----------------------------------
-
- When I started using a PC-DOS computer earlier this year, I found
- I needed a simple utility to help me in getting around among my
- drives and directories a little more easily. DOS did not provide
- this, and the public domain programs I found just did not do the
- trick. The short menu-type programs are pretty good, but still
- take longer to use when I just want to go back and forth between
- two directories. The PUSH and POP Directory programs also do not
- quite fill the bill. I also wanted to be able enter a short
- command to go to a parent directory, just as I can quickly go to
- the root directory. From this came XD.
-
- Please read these notes as well as the information in the XD.DOC
- file and try out the program. I am interested in feedback.
-
- Is this program at all useful to anyone else? Are there any
- suggestions on how the present functions might be improved? Are
- there any suggestions on improvements in the command structure?
- How about additional functions or features that might be useful?
- How about improvements in the .DOC file? I will consider any
- feedback for future versions of XD.
-
- I have tested this program quite thoroughly on my IBM PC-AT,
- running PC-DOS 3.2. It should work on other PC-DOS/MS-DOS
- systems at or above level 2.0, but I have not been able to test
- it on other systems. I have also been using it with Borland's
- Sidekick program with no problem. Please let me know if there
- are any problems so that I can make corrections to make it more
- generic. (Include the hardware and software involved as well as
- the symptoms.)
-
- I have designed the program so that future versions of XD should
- be compatible with the present version with regard to the
- resident memory portion and command structure. This will help if
- several version end up floating around. If I make a change
- (possibly based on a suggestion) that changes this, I will make
- sure this is clearly noted, and it is likely that the major
- version number would be changed at that point.
-
- Please note that the first successful use of XD does leave a
- small resident memory section, occupying less than a page of
- memory, including its memory control block. If it is critical
- that this resident section be loaded before another program, you
- can force this with the XD * command. See the DOC file for more
- notes on this.
-
- Please note the description of patches for limited customizing
- shown in the DOC file.
-
- If there is interest, I will distribute information on the XD
- "protocol" so that other directory changing programs can tie into
- the memory section for the saving of the previous directory.
- This would have to be written into the other program. (It would
- not include a DOS function filter, though someone could take on
- writing such a program.) In this way, you could use, say, a menu
- oriented utility to make a directory change and then use XD to
- quickly exchange between the two directories involved. Let me
- know if there is interest in this.
